I am delighted to extend congratulations to all serving and retired policewomen on the organization’s 57th annual commemoration of women’s remarkable contributions to law enforcement. Prior to 1964, policing was exclusive to men; however, on November 23, 1964, six courageous women made history by becoming the first women recruited into the RBPF. Since that day, numerous women have progressed within the organization, making invaluable contributions to its overall success. Undoubtedly, cultural norms have challenged the journey for many women in this profession; yet, as an organization, we triumphed over those obstacles and improved on the equality of women.

Policewomen have made significant progress in what was formerly a male-dominated field, including the promotion of Juanita Colebrooke as the first female Assistant Commissioner of Police and Ismella Davis Delancey as the first female Deputy Commissioner of Police. Today, policewomen are unrestricted in their roles and portfolios as is evidenced by Mrs. Loretta Mackey being the first female officer to act as Commissioner of Police. They are at the head of policing divisions and districts throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

I will continue my pledge to support the equitable treatment of all policewomen and work relentlessly to ensure that policies reflect the varied roles women play within our organization. I am honored to join you in celebrating the many outstanding achievements of women in policing.
